Work-based Learning

Apprenticeships
Age 16 – 23

As a work-based learner, you will be employed in a salon and attend college on a day release basis one day each week. On this programme you will complete Level 2 Hairdressing and Key Skills for Communication and Application of Number.

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) will provide funding for your training for up to two years and it is mandatory that you are employed in a salon throughout this course.

The Level 2 NVQ consists of eight mandatory units including basic drying, cutting, colouring and perming the hair and you will also need to choose one of the five optional units.

You will complete at least two written assignments, eight written oral tests and three mandatory exams. Your practical assessments for the hairdressing units are time led and must be completed within a commercially acceptable time.

Throughout the programme you will observe demonstrations, attend workshops, work on real models and practice on head ‘blocks’. You will follow a session tracker/scheme of work, your tutor will review your progress regularly and you will receive one-to-one tutorials. If you require support with any written work or key skills, vocational and essential skills tutors are available to help you. During the latter part of your training, in-salon assessors will visit your workplace to offer additional support and complete in-salon assessments to help you complete your qualification.

AA- Advanced Apprenticeships
